The first Polish free electron laser will be created at the National Center for Nuclear Research in Świerk. The project was marked with the PolFEL symbol. Free electron lasers enable the examination of materials, chemical compounds and biological molecules with extraordinary precision. The results of scientific experiments can lead to revolutionary discoveries and new technologies in the field of electronics, medicine and chemistry. Thanks to this project, Poland will actively join the group of large research installations in Europe.
PolFEL will be built in the hall of the first proton accelerator built in Świerk. Next to it, a superconducting photocathode laboratory, an experimental hall, ultrapure water laboratories and a cryogenics hall will be built.
Of course, this scientific infrastructure cannot function without ventilation and air conditioning systems that ensure temperature regulation with a precision of ±0.5°C, humidity control and dust cleanliness. Special laminar air vents have been designed in critical areas where undulators are installed. Laboratories are provided with high air purity (ISO4, ISO5) thanks to air diffusors with HEPA H14 filters. The amount of air will be controlled by electronic variable flow rate regulators.
Since even the smallest vibrations transmitted from the installation to the structure on which the base laser structure is mounted are unacceptable, the entire technical part of the ventilation will be built in a separate infrastructure building and connected to the PolFEL building via an overhead flyover.
Linear magnets, electron catcher, Wcz amplifiers, undulators and circulators will be cooled with chilled water produced in compressor cooling units. The direct cooling circuits of the helium compressor and vacuum pumps located in the cryogenics building will be cooled with process water from a system of three fan cooling towers.
